Perhaps the first, most notable shift in human production habits over the course of history was the development of an agricultural lifestyle, versus a hunter-gatherer lifestyle (54). In terms of living in harmony with nature, hunter-gathering had certain advantages. Human beings could not take more from the planet than they needed for an extended period of time. Human tribes were mobile, so they could not store food for long. With agriculture, tribes were assured of a more steady supply of sustenance. They did not have to wait long periods of time to find big game...

Agriculture enabled humans to be able to use animals for milk as well as meat. They could remain stationary for long periods of time and could store food as well.
The growth of an agricultural lifestyle generated new consumption habits as well. Humans began to produce more than they could use. Their stationary habits enabled them to store grains and vegetables in silos or to dry meat. Over the course of time, the human species began to exercise more control over plants and animals, carefully cultivating plants to suit their tastes and local conditions and domesticating animals with particular physical and temperamental advantages that made them more suitable for eating, milking or work. When humans did migrate or travel, they often took their domesticated plants and animals with them.
